“We live in an era that seems to discover new rights every day and then expects government and culture and society to pay for it. The church emphasizes responsibility more than rights.”

Coming Down From the Mountain - Reflecting on Sunday
In today’s readings, we stand in awe with Peter, James and John. But we also listen with horror as Abraham hears God calling him to Mount Moriah, to sacrifice his son. This event is, even to this day, a mystery at the heart of both Judaism and Christianity. What are we to make of a God who asks for this kind of sacrifice? It takes all of divine revelation for us to come to terms with it.
Seeking Jesus' presence as I am disappearing
Jane wrote these reflections on living, dying and rising with Alzheimer’s with her husband and caregiver, Robert. They tell it like it is but also give hope and assurance not only to others like them but to each of us on the same Lenten journey that is part of life for all of us. However, Jane passed away the Thursday after Ash Wednesday.
The New Rules for Radicals
There is tremendous potential to be harnessed— if we know how and are willing to put forth the effort. Facebook, twitter and other forms of social media are changing the name of the game when it comes effecting change in the culture.
The Taylor Swift Guide to Evangelization
If your message doesn’t resonate with people, no one will pay attention. Taylor Swift has that attention thing down.
Tornado destroys Illinois Catholic church
The church took a hard hit because it was the tallest structure in town. However, the marble altar that came from Italy managed to survive the storm. A former pastor, Monsignor Joseph Lawler, said he hopes the altar can be disassembled and saved.
Lost in Translation: Eugene Peterson and His 'Message'
Peterson’s passion and love of the Bible is palpable when he talks about it. It’s not an academic or intellectual pursuit for him. It’s a romance. A love story between God and Eugene, between God and all of us. And we are part of the ongoing narrative that the scriptures tell.
New Collaboration between ASU and the University of Mary
Through this new partnership between the University of Mary and Arizona State University, it is my fervent hope that our Catholic young people will be assisted to remain closely connected to Christ and the Church, and that all students will be helped to take up their vocation and mission from God in Arizona and wherever
in the world He leads them.
in the world He leads them.
Lenten Help From Francis of Assisi
We become different people in the course of honest and persevering prayer. By recognizing our previous blind spots and repenting for them, we move closer to being the people God created us to be. This Lent, can we see more of God’s self-revelation in Scripture?
Acting Like Jesus
We must not neglect the ministry of the word of God but we also can't forget that Jesus came for the sick and not the healthy. That's a balance we must maintain. We lose our mission when our schedules only include people who share our faith.
Arizona Catholic Bishops Oppose Death Penalty
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PHOENIX (Feb. 27, 2012) — The Bishops of the Arizona Catholic Conference today reiterate their opposition to the use of the death penalty. The Arizona Bishops’ objection comes in the days preceding two scheduled executions by the State of Arizona.
It is important to emphasize that the Arizona Bishops express their compassion for those who are victims of brutal crimes and for their families. The effects of murder, in particular, are truly awful for families, and we pray for the healing of all those who grieve and suffer because of it.
Pope John Paul II, an ardent defender of human life on the world stage, articulated that the use of capital punishment should be limited only to extremely rare situations where it is necessary to defend society (Evangelium Vitae, #56).
Consistent with this belief, the Bishops of the Arizona Catholic Conference consider the continued use of the death penalty in today’s society as problematic and a practice that will hopefully end soon.

Cardinal George: All Catholic hospitals will close in two years under HHS mandate
“What will happen if the HHS regulations are not rescinded?” he asked. A faithful ministry must choose between selling itself to a non-Catholic group, paying “exorbitant annual fines” until going bankrupt, breaking its ties to the Church’s “moral and social teachings and the oversight of its ministry by the local bishop,” or closing down.
The Church is Losing Young Families
We Catholics are all about big families. But we often make it very hard for young, growing families to participate in the life of the Church. If we want to recruit or keep the next generation, we have to be a Church of young families. That’s a simple fact.
